Going to Japan

I was asked how I plan to share my travel experiences and whether I would post on my blog. So why not?
Here is a summary of our trip to Japan. I started writing a draft while traveling to collect my thoughts and organize my experiences, but I quickly realized that I wouldn’t have the time or energy to publish while traveling. I’m currently reviewing these notes on my flight back to Germany, and I’ll add pictures and get someone to proofread once I’m back home. I will split the trip into the regions where we stayed, so you can expect six posts in total. The first will cover our first days in Tokyo. But first:

Getting there

We took the Deutsche Bahn from Stuttgart in the early afternoon. To be honest, I was more worried about issues with the train schedule than with our flight. Would we arrive at the airport on time, and would everything go well? However, since we chose a direct train starting in Stuttgart, there were no delays, and we arrived on time.

We had three hours at the airport before the plane took off. This gave us enough time to reach Terminal 2, check in, and pass through security. Overall, the entire process was painless since we traveled on a Tuesday with fewer activities at the airport. The only downside was that the shop behind the security checkpoint was not open yet, so we were unable to quench our thirst.

The final months – Part II

After the exam period was over, friends were visiting, so we planned several activities. One of them was the Muddy Angel Run, a fun run for women where the goal is to get dirty for charity. Spectating was fun and luckily the weather cooperated.

The Cabin Weekend is the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) event of the semester. The ESN team organizes a big cabin for all international students in Lucerne. In order to document this event, I decided to divide the following into several parts.

Half time, the third

Writing these updates is interesting, on one side you really start to see how time flies and on the other hand you have to recall what happened during this time. Last time I started to write a bit earlier and only had to do some final adjustments but this time I`m a bit behind so without further ado here are my experiences from April:

April this year had some really warm and already summer like days and fortunately the best days did match the weekends while the weekdays where more often cloudy and with rain. But first I used a fortunate break in my school schedule to make a quick trip to Germany and back to pick some last stuff and visit some friends. This is the last planned trip until my exams are done.

Settling in, the second month

Things started to settle in the second month. With the initial tings out of the way a schedule in the weeks could be found. Still some events and other activities did mix up the flow and I also have to remind myself that time flies, heck even with my posts here I can clearly see how fast things progress if you keep busy.

The first month

Settling in was a bit tricky. Also writing this post is. Somehow you think about what to write and where to start and then all of the sudden one entire month is already gone. So instead of doing other tasks or my homework I will just do it.

This is now a travel blog

During my studies I decided to do one semester abroad.
As I have this blog now for some time I thought about reviving it.
This is mainly to collect my experiences and something for me to look back after some time.
And not to spam anyone. In good old fashion web2.0 everyone interested can have a look.

Not sure if I manage to maintain a schedule but I will try.

Tasmotize Sinilink USB Switch

I wanted to be able to turn the Chromecast connected to my AVR on and off remotely without unplugging the cable. The rationale was that I did not want to have this device active all the time, only when I want to use it. One option would be to use a dedicated power supply in combination with a wireless plug. I use such devices with the open source software Tasmota.

After some digging around I found the Sinilink USB Switch Module (XY-WFUSB), a USB thumb drive size device that is able to be flashed with Tasmota as it uses an ESP8266 as chip.

As you can see the flashing is not trivial as the pin connectors on the device are quiet small. In my collection of electronic components I managed to find some pin connector that where fitting the small holes and could be used as adapter to regular sized breadboard cables.

Three pins where inserted from the top of the board and three from the bottom. Then trimmed to size so that they would not stick out of the board anymore and then wired according to the guide.

Another user was using sewing pins and Andreas Spiess made great video documenting the whole process that really helped me and encouraged to try this out.
